Played a couple of decades of rugby. Broke my back playing (compression fracture no paralysis). Cauliflower ears (plastic surgery) and all, but rugby isn't the most brutal sport at the pro level. I'd have to say that title definitely goes to American football based on average quality and length of life after a professional career in the sport. Honorable mentions to hockey, lacrosse and water polo (which I participated in for a few years too in my youth). But I certainly would not want to play rugby professionally today - they'd have killed me.
